Straußenwirtin Magdalena, die am Kachelofen sitzt

Gasthaus zum Strauss

Welcome! In our cozy restaurant in Breitnau, we’re serving locally sourced dishes traditional to the Black Forest. We’re located approximately 1050 meters above sea level in the middle of nature. That means there’s also an amazing view for you to enjoy, as well as lots of beautiful hiking and biking trails leading up to the restaurant.
You don’t speak German? No worries, our staff speaks English and we’re happy to welcome people from all over the world.

What makes us special

Homemade liquors

Our homemade egg nog and “Gartenhägler” (a black currant liquor made following our secret family recipe).

Home-cured ham & bacon

Our homemade bacon and ham. Both are very traditional to the Black Forest. We’re curing the meat in our very own smoke chamber!

Bratwurst in slices

Our popular bratwurst, served in thick slices instead of the classic sausage shape.

Homemade bread

Our homemade bread, baked fresh in our traditional wood stove.

The "Straussenflipper"

Our “Straußenflipper”, a wooden pinball machine that’s entertained our little guests for several generations.

"Kachelofen"

Our traditional wood stove: used for heating the restaurant, baking our bread, smoking our bacon and ham and as a cozy seat for waiting guests.

How to find us

Coming from Titisee-Neustadt:

Driving on the Neustädter Straße / Titiseestraße, turn onto Jostalstraße. It’s right beside the “Helios Klinik”, a large hospital. Take the first exit to the left, then turn right directly after. Keep to the left, then follow the road up the valley to the very last farm at the top. This is our “Gasthaus zum Strauß”.

Coming from Freiburg:

Driving on the B500, shortly after passing the exit leading to Hinterzarten, take the second exit to the left. Turn left again to pass by the “Gasthof Lafette” located there. Follow the road for about 2,5 kilometers, until it ends. Take the second sharp right turn. Turn left twice, then follow the road until the first building appears behind a hill. This is our “Gasthaus zum Strauß”.
